Grandpa's favorite squirrel gun
Customers were seeking a 22 caliber rimfire rifle with a lower price than the 1890, and Winchester met that demand with the Model 1906. The 1906 offered a 20" round barrel and a shotgun-style buttstock with a composition buttplate.
The Model 1906 was the first model listed by Winchester chambered for 22 Short, 22 Long, and 22 Long Rifle cartridges, interchangeably. This design innovation dramatically boosted sales of the popular rifle.
